For anyone who has ever seen the movie, Animal House, you will
already know what a toga is. If you are one of the few who missed this
older classic, before embarking on tying your toga, you may want to
take the time to watch this movie first. It will definitely put you in
the mood for some Roman style toga fun.
There are a few different methods when it comes to how to tie a
toga. For the sake of simplicity, the following are the basics for the
uncomplicated bed sheet toga.
You will need a twin bed sheet and 4 safety pins.
Hold the sheet horizontally and wrap it around your waist 1 to 2
times, depending on your body size.
Use a safety pin to connect where the ends meet.
Put the remainder of the sheet over either of your
shoulders.
Now bring it back to the waist and either safety pin it or tuck
it in.
If you consult the history books you will find that women never
wore togas. However, that really makes no difference when it comes to
a toga party. There are 2 ways of tying a toga for women. They can
either use the above instructions or choose to tie a stola as
follows:
You will need 2 single or twin bed sheets, and 4 safety pins
along with 2 shower curtain rings.
Hold each sheet separately long ways. Fold in the sides so it is
no wider than your body.
Take each folded sheet, separately, and fold a foot shorter than
your height. Using safety pins, attach it. This part will be the
bottom part of your stola.
Taking both of the folded sheets by the top 2 corners, slide the
shower curtain rings over them. Next, pull enough of the sheet through
to tie a knot. The shower curtain rings will rest on your shoulders
or you can simply safety pin this part rather than using the
rings.
Now you are ready to drop the combined sheets over your
head. Safety pin them on either side of your waist. You may add a
draped neckline if you wish. A belt or ribbon looks nice added to the
waist.
If you wish, you make you own laurel leaf head piece from a bent
coat hanger with fake or real leaves attached.
Now you are all set to be the life of the toga party!
