Ancient Roman Costumes

Ancient roman costumes were generally loose soft clothing wrapped around the bodies of either male or female. The pins were usually used for keeping the cloths at the desired places on the body. Women were using the cloths having two parts, one to cover the front part of the body and the other part to cover the back part of the body. These two parts after having on the body were joined on the both sides using metal pins or clamps. This female dress was known as stola. Above this stola, females were using a long rectangular piece of cloth for wrapping around the body and this clothing was known as palla. The dressing of the males of ancient roman's was a loose and long rectangular cloth used to wrap up the body on the upper side below the neck and on the lower side below the thighs. This male dress was known as toga. Toga was used by the women also. But after some time i.e. after 5 BC, the toga became the regular dress of the prostitutes. Because of this reason, the toga was disliked by standard romans of ancient times.
The cloth types were different for diverse classes of the ancient roman societies. The colors used for preparing dresses were of utmost importance for the people of ancient romans and the color patterns were used according to the hierarchy and strata of the roman civilians. For example, the purple border on the toga cloths was the identity of judges and the magistrates. The army generals were used to wearing togas with golden bordering. The members of the royal family and godly peoples were using fully purple colored cloths. Sandals were having very important role in the Ancient roman costumes. The rich and prosperous inhabitant's sandals were of fine quality leather in contrast to the common people who were wearing coarser and low quality leather sandals. One very significant part of the sandals was that the laces of these sandals very long and used to wrap the portions of the legs up to the knee. The discovery of socks is associated with the Ancient roman costumes. The socks discovery relates to the victory of romans over the Germany where the temperature in the winter season falls even below the zero degrees. To protect their legs from frosting conditions romans made a vital innovation of socks that are such a useful item used even now. |
